Athan not playing on Alexa? Start here

Almost every missed Athan comes down to the routine. Work through these checks in order. Most take less than a minute.

1. Test from the dashboard

Open alexa.imuslimlife.com → Status and tap Test routine now.

2. Check the routine trigger

In the Alexa app, open your Athan routine. The trigger must read Muslim Companion Azan opens. If it shows a switch or doorbell, or says “turns on”, delete the trigger and add Smart Home → Muslim Companion Azan → Open.

Also check the routine is switched on. Alexa turns some new routines off.

3. Re-link and rebuild the trigger

If the sensor is missing or the test still fails:

  1. Alexa app → Skills → Muslim Companion → Disable, then Enable and sign in again.
  2. Say “Alexa, discover devices” and check Muslim Companion Azan appears.
  3. In each Athan routine, delete the trigger and add Muslim Companion Azan → Open again. Routines keep the old sensor otherwise.
  4. Tap Test routine now on the Status page.

The wrong Echo plays, or none of them

Open the routine and check Hear Alexa from. It must name an Echo that is online. To play on several Echos, see one routine per Echo.

The Athan is at the wrong time

On the dashboard, confirm your location and calculation method. You can also ask “Alexa, ask Muslim Companion which calculation method should I use”: it suggests the method most used where you live. For a later Asr, set the madhab to Hanafi.

Still stuck?

Say “Alexa, open Muslim Companion” once on your Echo, then check the Status page: it shows when your Echo last checked in and when your next Athan is due. The Alexa app's Activity tab shows whether your routine ran.

Questions

Why can't I test the routine by voice?

The Muslim Companion Azan sensor is a virtual contact sensor. Saying "Alexa, open Muslim Companion Azan" only asks what you want to do. Test routine now on the Status page sends the same signal your routine waits for.

The Athan worked before and stopped. Why?

The most common reason is that the skill was disabled and enabled again, which creates a new sensor while your routines keep the old one. Rebuild each routine's trigger (step 3).
