Athan on Alexa β€Ί The Azan routine

The Alexa routine that plays your Athan

One routine is all the automatic Athan needs. Here is exactly what goes in it, and how to play the Athan on more than one Echo.

What the routine does

At each prayer time, Muslim Companion opens a sensor in your Alexa app called Muslim Companion Azan. Your routine waits for that sensor to open, then runs open Muslim Companion on your Echo. The skill knows which prayer is due, so the same routine plays the right Athan five times a day, including your Fajr Athan.

The routine, step by step

  1. Find the sensor. Say β€œAlexa, discover devices” and check that Muslim Companion Azan is in your device list.
  2. Trigger. Routines β†’ + β†’ When this happens β†’ Smart Home β†’ Muslim Companion Azan β†’ Open.
  3. Action. Alexa will β†’ Add an action β†’ Customized β†’ type open Muslim Companion.
  4. Device. Under Hear Alexa from, choose the Echo that should play the Athan.
  5. Save and make sure the routine is switched on.

Sensor, not switch

The Athan signal is a contact sensor opening. Some accounts also show a switch or doorbell with a similar name. A routine that listens for a switch turning on never fires at prayer times, even though the name looks right.

If you disable and enable the skill again, Alexa creates a new Muslim Companion Azan sensor, but your routine keeps pointing at the old one. Open the routine, delete the trigger, and add Muslim Companion Azan β†’ Open again. Re-selecting the existing trigger is not enough.

Playing the Athan on several Echo devices

A customized action plays on one Echo. To hear the Athan in several rooms, create one routine per Echo: each one uses the same trigger (Muslim Companion Azan opens) and the same action, with a different Echo under Hear Alexa from. They all fire together at each prayer time.

Want the Athan in some rooms only, or not in the bedroom? Just leave those Echos without a routine.

Check it works

On the dashboard's Status page, tap Test routine now. Every routine on the Muslim Companion Azan sensor fires, so each of your Echos should play the Athan.

Questions

Why "open Muslim Companion" and not "play athan"?

Opening the skill from the routine lets it decide what is due: the Athan for the current prayer, and in Ramadan mode the Iftar announcement at Maghrib.

Can I add other actions to the routine?

Yes, but keep the Athan action first. For lights and wake-up scenes, use the separate Home Scenes sensors so the Athan routine stays simple.

Do I need a routine for each prayer?

No. One routine covers all five prayers. You only add more routines to play on more Echos.
